Eurostat releases statistics on first residence permits for 2019

On 27 November 2019, the report on statistics on first residence permits for 2019 was published.
 

In 2019, about 3 million first residence permits were issued across the European Union to citizens outside the European Union, marking an increase of 6% compared to 2018.

The reasons for issuing first residence permits for 2019 were: employment (41%), family reasons (27%), education (14%) and other reasons that include the provision of international protection (18%).

The highest number of first residence permits in relation to the population was recorded in Malta (42 permits per 1000 population), Cyprus (26 permits per 1000 population) and in Poland (19 permits per 1000 population). The average number of residence permits issued throughout the European Union is 7 per 1000 population.

The largest number of first residence permits were issued to citizens of Ukraine. 5.7 times higher value than the citizens of Morocco who have the second highest value.
