In 2020, about 2.2 million first residence permits were issued across the European Union to citizens outside the European Union, marking an decrease of 24% compared to 2019.
The reasons for issuing first residence permits for 2019 were: employment (40%), family reasons (28%), education (11%) and other reasons that include the provision of international protection (21%).
The highest number of first residence permits in relation to the population was recorded in Poland (26 %), Germany (14 %) and in Spain (14 %). The only increase in the total number of permits issued in 2020 when compared with 2019 was recorded in Lithuania (5%).
The largest number of first residence permits were issued to citizens of Ukraine (86%).
