EUROSTAT published statistics for immigration law enforcement for 2020

In 2020, 137 800 non-EU citizens Union were refused entry into the territory of the European Union,  which is 79% fewer compared to the 2019 statistics. The highest number of refusals of entry were reported in Hungary, Poland, Croatia and Romania. The largest fall was recorded in Spain.

It has been determined that 557 500 non-EU citizens were found to be illegally present in a member state of the European Union, 11% less than in 2019. Citizens of Ukraine, Syria and Morocco accounted for the highest number of people found to be illegally present in the EU in 2020. Member States of the European Union with the highest number of illegal presence are Germany, France, Hungary and Spain.

Furthermore, 70 200 non-EU citizens were returned outside the territory of the European Union, 51% less compared to 2019.

Compared with 2019, downturns are observed for all these main indicators and reflect the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
