The integration of third-country nationals who are long-term residents in the Member States is considered as a key element in promoting economic and social cohesion in the European Union. One of the first pieces of EU legislation that was adopted dealing with immigration to the European Union was the Council Directive 2003/109/EC concerning the status of third-country nationals who are long-term residents. While the Directive entered into force on 23 January 2006, the implementation of the Directive by Member States has not been uniform.

The new inform "Long-term resident status in the EU" provides a detailed overview of the similarities and differences between Member States in all provisions related to long-term residence status.
