This conference, organized by the European Migration Network in partnership with the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), on June 6 2023, discussed common challenges on the Western Balkan migration route and future actions, both at the regional and national levels

The event brought together over fifty experts from across the Europe and representatives of the EU and international agencies. Challenges in the field of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants, as well as readmission and return, were presented.

The number of detections more than doubled in 2022 compared to 2021 along the Wester Balkans route, which remains a key migratory path into the European Union.

Attention has been mounting on the migration situation in the region that has been challenging the institutional capacities of the Western Balkans, particularly in relation to migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings.

One representative of EMN NCP Croatia attended the conference.
